About Me

My name is Ryan Colley and I am a Social Studies teacher at Upper Darby High School in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania.  I currently teach 9th grade Global Studies at the Academic and ELL (English Language Learner) levels.  Before accepting my current position at UDHS, I taught 8th-grade U.S. History for three years at Beverly Hills Middle School, also in the Upper Darby School District.  Prior to my employment with Upper Darby, I served as a building substitute at West Chester East High School in West Chester, Pennsylvania.  I began working in the field of education in the Fall of 2010 as a daily substitute for both the Substitute Teacher Service (STS) and the Chester County Intermediate Unit after student teaching at the Center for Arts and Technology-Pickering Campus.

I like to say that I took the road less traveled in my journey to become an educator.  I graduated with a bachelor's degree in History and a minor in Professional Education from West Chester University in the Spring of 2009.  I decided to graduate without student teaching because I was seriously considering Officer Candidate School for the Army or Navy at the time.  I was concerned that I might miss out on other opportunities if I spent my entire life in the classroom.  After carefully considering my options I decided to give student teaching a try...if I didn't like it then I could simply move on to other options.  I enrolled in a student teaching program through Eastern University and quickly realized that I enjoyed teaching very much.

I am in the process of earning a Masters degree in Educational Technology through the online campus of Boise State University.  I firmly believe that appropriate incorporation of modern technology into traditional classroom environments yield higher quality learning outcomes for students.  This blog represents my best attempt to bring additional insight into topics covered within our Global Studies curriculum at Upper Darby High School.  It is my hope that students find the content and reflections posted on this blog useful for deepening their own understanding.
